Hack: Free Wi-Fi At AT&T Hotspots (Starbucks, Barnes and Nobles)

AT&T runs the hotspots at Starbucks and Barnes and Nobles and they are offering free Wi-Fi to iPhone customers. If you don’t have an iPhone you can still get free Wi-Fi by switching your browsers user agent. By sending an iPhone user agent from our laptops we can get free Wi-Fi without an iPhone or iTouch.

A User Agent is a name sent by your browser to let the web site know what client you are using. So a Firefox browser might send a user agent like: FireFox 2.0 (Win XP) This is simple to change.

The easiest way to change your user agent is by adding the User Agent Switcher plug-in on Firefox. A huge list of different user agents can be found here.

However the one we want is the iPhone user agent:
Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU like Mac OS X; en) AppleWebKit/420+ (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.0 Mobile/1A543a Safari/419.3

So set your user agent to this and BAM! Free Wi-Fi at AT&T Hotspots. I know this is a pretty simple hack so it should be plugged up soon…. so get it while it last.
